Down Syndrome Resources
Here is a list of resources that we have found helpful so far, as well as links to where you can download or purchase them. More to be added as we continue on.
Books:
Babies with Down Syndrome: A New Parent’s Guide by Susan J. Skallerup (find it on Amazon here)
Down Syndrome Parenting 101: Must have Advice for making your life easier by Natalie Hale (find it on Amazon here)
47 Strings: Tessa’s Special Code by Becky Carey (a book for kids about kids with Down syndrome) (find it on Amazon here)
DVDs:
Down Syndrome: The First 18 Months (find it on Amazon here) (It’s worth noting that I found this DVD really informative, but a little negative in the way it portrayed pediatricians and therapists… I thought it made it seem like people might not be willing to help as much as they should, but that has been the total opposite from the experiences that we have had so far. You have to be an advocate, but everyone that I have encountered has been just lovely.)
Chicago-Area Resources
National Association for Down Syndrome
UPS for DownS (a parent group)
Other Resources:
National Down Syndrome Society: http://www.ndss.org/
American Academy of Pediatrics Health Care Guidelines: Here’s the family friendly version and here’s the version for pediatricians. I thought reading through the full version for pediatricians (armed with a dictionary and Google for some of the terms I didn’t understand) was really helpful.
Gigi’s Playhouse I can’t wait to take Tessa here!!
